"MAGIC" DIVE TRIPS
SOME OF THE WRECKS, SCENIC SITES AND OTHER ISLANDS TO DIVE AROUND JERSEY
WRECKS
The Schokland was a 225 foot , 1500 ton freighter built in Holland in 1915 and used to transport German troops and equipment between the Channel Islands and France during the war. With a reported passenger and crew of 315 on board it sank in early January 1943 after hitting rocks off the South coast of Jersey with a reported loss of 136 lives.
Lying on her keel, the Schokland sits in 25 –30 metres of water (depending on the state of the tide) and has three holds - two forward, one at the stern and the engine room between them. The holds are alive with schools of Pouting and large Pollack with some very large Conger to be found among the wreckage.Sunk by gunfire by HMS Ashanti, the wreck lies approx. 9 miles South West of Jersey. The wreck lies in approx. 34 metres with the bow blown off and sitting on its port side just in front of the main body sitting on its keel.
Sank by allied aircraft during the war, the Armed Trawler sits in 18 – 28 metres of water off the South coast of Jersey. This is a small wreck full of sea life with many of its distinguishing features still intact. Also sank by allied aircraft during the war the Kromwyk lies upside down in approximately 18 – 28 metres off the South coast of the Island. Broken in half it attracts an abundance of see life. The Rock Barge was purposely sunk in 1997 outside of the shipping lanes on the South West of the Island. About 25 metres in length she sits in approximately 22 metres of water and is popular with training.A deep wreck about 11 miles off the South West coast of Jersey lying in 40 – 48 metres. The Princess sank after it caught fire and anchored up in August 1935.Lying in 25-30 metres half a mile out from Bouley Bay this is an extremely popular wreck dive for visitors and locals. The Mauve was purposely sunk in 1992 and has recently had the addition in 2002 of a large pontoon being sank next to it to enhance and encourage marine life to flourish.
Also next to the stern of the La Mauve is a small fishing boat the Striker making the whole dive site a photographer's paradise for the abundance of sea life that now thrives at the site.
There are many local reefs that we dive which include the Paternosters, Les Dirouilles, Les Ecrehou, Grosnez, Ronez Point (quarry), Demi Rock (green buoy), Les Sambues – Tour de Rozel, West Rock, Rigdon Bank, Banc Desormes – Most probably the best is the Sauvage Reef with Corals, superb Sea Life with the occasional Tope to be seen!Other Islands we dive include Chausey – a French Island (remember the Euro’s!) and the ever popular Sark which the main dive consists of a wall dive which starts at 18 metres going down to 40 metres and a Reef dive where Corals and Sea Urchins abound.
